Day 4 - Sunday Sermon Recap
Welcome to day 4 of our devotional based on last Sunday’s sermon:
Romans 8:31, 33-35, 37 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
On today’s devotional we focus on two crucial pieces of our spiritual armor: the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. The helmet of salvation protects our minds with the assurance of our salvation. Our salvation has been completed. We now stand before God justified. Now, we are in Christ and this means that nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God—not trouble, not hardship, not even death itself.
The sword of the Spirit, God’s Word—is our offensive weapon against the lie’s of the enemy. Like we saw in Hebrews 4 this is a double edge sword, this means that in our battle against the ways of the world and the ways of our enemy we stand in God’s truth, for it is the truth that sets us free it is the truth that sanctifies us.
However the sword doesn’t only help us against the attacks of our enemy, the word of God also helps us overcome the cravings of our flesh. For it is through the piercing sword of God’s Word that the thoughts and intentions of our hearts will be revealed.
So, how often are you tempted to rely in what you do and not on what Christ has done for you? Are you trusting Christ in regards to your standing before God? Is your life permeated in truth? Are you allowing the Scriptures to cut you in order to reveal the true intentions of your heart?
Challenge yourself to memorize Scripture in order to be prepared for the spiritual battle. Reflect on how God's Word has guided and strengthened you in the past. And ask the Holy Spirit to deepen your love for Scripture and to help you apply it effectively in your life.
